RAVENS, SCRATCH

& QUILL

CORVUS REX presents Scare-crow and Corvid as two related archetypes of life-cycle and destiny. They share a pictorial narrative which encompasses an agrarian mythology.

A single bird stands alone in each of the “Raven” artworks. While the genus Corvidae is referred to, these are not ornithological portraits. Subtle distortions suggest a non-bird spirit and prescience. Claws are exaggerated. Often the bird holds some object such as a feather, a conch shell or an egg. These symbols hint at some fateful riddle, like an oracle, with an equivocal so-lution. “Scratch” images are created by sgraffitto tech-nique – black laid over color meticulously scratched away to reveal an iconic image of a bird. Similarly precise, the “Quill” drawings unfold in flow-ing ink line.
